An unexpected emergency can be scary, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Our team is here for you when emergencies happen and we’ll always do our best to get you the care you need. 

We’re only ever one call away so please get in touch with us as soon as possible if you find yourself in an emergency. If our office is closed, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency clinic. 

Is It an Emergency? 

Most emergencies are completely unexpected. Acting quickly can be the difference between saving and losing your sight so it’s important to be able to identify an emergency when it happens. 

Some common eye emergencies that we treat include:

  • Complications & infections from eye diseases
  • Chemical injuries or burns to the eye 
  • Foreign objects lodged in the eye 
  • Blunt trauma to the eyes, head, or neck 

What to Do in an Emergency

If you have an emergency, the first thing you should do is seek medical attention. Please call us at Family Vision Center or visit your nearest emergency clinic if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Any loss of vision
  • Intense eye pain, burning, or stinging
  • Sudden & extreme sensitivity to light
  • Bleeding from the eye
  • You’ve experienced blunt trauma to the head or neck 
  • A sudden change in pupil size 
  • An eye is bulging or sticking out
  • You have experienced a chemical injury
  • You have a foreign object stuck in your eye

What Not to Do in an Emergency 

If you’ve injured your eye, your first reaction might actually be counterintuitive and cause further harm to your eyes and vision. No matter what’s happened, please don’t

  • Rub or apply pressure to your eye
  • Remove objects stuck in your eye 
  • Use any sort of tool in your eye
  • Remove contact lenses unless you’ve suffered a chemical injury 
  • Put medications or ointments in your eye
